Leaving the capital behind, the road winds through dramatic mountain landscapes, deep river gorges, and remote villages where traditional life has changed little over generations. As the scenery becomes increasingly wild, you'll gain your first glimpse of the mighty Panj River, which forms the natural border between Tajikistan and Afghanistan.

Cross the legendary Ak-Baital Pass at 4,655 meters, the highest point of the Pamir Highway. Surrounded by barren peaks and vast open landscapes, you'll feel as though you've entered another world.
Continue to the breathtaking Lake Karakul, whose turquoise waters reflect the surrounding mountains in perfect silence. Border crossing time depends on customs procedures and seasonal conditions.
After crossing the border into Kyrgyzstan, descend into the fertile Alay Valley and arrive in the traditional Kyrgyz village of Sary-Mogol, where nomadic culture remains an integral part of daily life.
